Tips to Quit Smoking

I’ve been smoking cigarettes on and off since I was 17. I hate them, but then they make me feel so good in the moment that I always return to them, even though I know they are bad in the long run. Recently a variety of factors ( read: stupidity ) have caused me to pick them up again. I’m only smoking 5 per week or so. Here are some tricks that I’ve been using to keep the habit at a manageable level so that I can easily quit when I’m ready.

1. Purchase from Portland’s homeless: Sounds crazy? And perhaps it is. But as soon as you buy a pack of smokes, your habit will go to the next level. I happen to spend a lot of time in the city of Portland, and the homeless community there is the perfect ecosystem for my situation. They have cigarettes and I buy them for $1 a piece when the cravings are too much to bear. It’s a win / win. I can get a quick fix without starting a serious habit, and I’m helping my suppliers capitalize on what little they have.

2. Have some serious fitness goals: I want to run a 5k and a 10k this summer. I’m almost ready for a 5k on July 18th, and I plan to run a 10k in September. I know I will certainly fail these goals if I start smoking too much.

3. Try a hypnosis solution: I’m currently trying the Quit Smoking app designed by Surf City Apps. You can try it for free, and then it’s $2.99 to unlock all of the features. The idea is to listen to the recording once per day for 30 days. I’ve only made it 2 days in a row, but it is nice to know it is there for me when I’m ready.
